What if Latin America Ruled the World (Cup)?

What if Latin America Ruled the World?

A lot of our customers have asked what coverage we're giving to the World Cup at Sabor. Whilst the focus for us remains firmly on the food and drink throughout this special season, we know that some of you won't want to lose track of what's happening to your favourite team during a night out. For that reason we're installing a projector at the back of the restaurant this week, and we'll be showing all the England and Latin American games throughout the contest (but with the sound off). So don't worry that you'll miss anything when you visit us for dinner over the next few weeks. If, on the other hand, you're one of those people who want to get right away from the football when they go out for a meal - just let us know when you make your reservation, and we'll seat you accordingly!

As always the menu is evolving at Sabor, amongst our starters right now is Sopa de Tomate y Coco, a classic coastal combination of fresh plum tomato and coconut milk served with tostones (grilled plantain) and sofrito. Main courses include an escabeche of fresh swordfish, grilled then marinated in a red wine vinaigrette, served at room temperature with mixed peppers and tostones (grilled plantain) and aioli. For a meatier option our conejo en salsa de chocolate is back: succulent, slow-cooked rabbit in an authentic spicy Inca chocolate sauce, served with papas a la huancaina (Peruvian-style potatoes baked with a cheese sauce flavoured with turmeric and cayenne).

If you were intrigued by the title of this message, or by the graphic above, then we can explain. The Colombian writer Oscar Guardiola-Rivera, who teaches at Birkbeck College in London, has a new book coming out this summer called What if Latin America Ruled the World? This has previewed already at the Hay Literary Festival, and we're delighted that Oscar has agreed to speak about his book at a fund-raising dinner at Sabor for Colombiage 2010, a showcase of Colombian (literary, cinematic and musical) culture to be held later this year. The dinner will take place on Wednesday 14th July, and will also serve to mark and celebrate the bicentenary of Colombian independence. All are welcome - and there are further details about Oscar's book on our blog.

Finally we should let you know that, in keeping with what has become something of a seasonal tradition at Sabor, we'll be closed for weekend lunches through the summer, giving our staff as good a chance as our customers to enjoy the warmer weather outside. Of course, this does mean the venue is available for private hire, e.g. if you need to host a daytime wedding breakfast. Otherwise we hope to see you soon for dinner, any night from Tuesday to Sunday.

Nos Vemos!
